Huelga de Hambre

Here’s something you don’t see in the “developed world”:  A national president embarking on a hunger strike (una huelga de hambre).  Bolivian President Evo Morales is doing just that, refusing to eat in an effort “to pressure Bolivia’s congress to set a firm date for general elections that are likely to return him to power.”  Bolivian President Announces Hunger Strike (AP April 9, 2009) available at: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/30138176/.  Extreme?  Maybe, but the action Morales seeks is seemingly mandated by the new Constitution, approved by a majority of voters in January.  We’ll keep our eyes on this story as it develops.

The Plot Thickens in Peru

As we reported earlier, ex-Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori was recently convicted of human rights abuses and sentenced to 25 years in prison.  (Actually, “human rights abuses” is a fairly generous euphemism; according to the verdict, he had 25 people murdered.)  Of course, he plans to appeal.  But that’s standard–nothing too exciting.  What is interesting, however, is the possibility of a pardon.  Fujimori’s daughter, Keiko Fujimori, is a congresswoman and candidate in the 2011 presidential race.  She has vowed to pardon her father if she wins.  Talk about stirring the pot.

Obama for Amnesty

Building on campaign promises, members of the Obama administration recently confirmed that the President plans to push for serious immigration reform, including a plan that would allow illegal residents to gain legal status.  This is sure to be a divisive issue, but it’s nice to see Obama preparing to engage it.  It seems like immigration reform is always on the agenda but then always tabled.
