Beautiful, Precarious

In light of the recent climate conference in Bolivia, I thought I’d share a few photos, gathered from the internet, of Bolivia’s high-mountain glaciers.  These guys are melting rapidly.  Let’s do what we can to change that.

Bolivia's only ski operation, now closed on account of the glacier's retreat.

Mt. Illimani, the iconic peak that towers over La Paz.

Kudos to Democracy Now

For its excellent coverage of this week’s climate conference in Bolivia.

Big Ideas

One of the more impressive ideas generated from the “alternative” climate conference in Bolivia:  the creation of an international court for climate justice.  The court would enforce climate-themed treaties and agreements, such as the Kyoto Protocol.

Didn’t Like Copenhagen? Give Cochabamba a Shot.

The World People’s Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth kicks off today in Cochabamba, Bolivia.  Disappointed by the results in Copenhagen, Evo Morales announced this Conference as a chance for so-called “developing” nations to meet and devise new ways to combat climate change.  Morales and many others believe the Copenhagen talks largely ignored the plight of developing nations, which will suffer the greatest harms caused by climate change.  Los Tiempos reports some 20,000 people have arrived for the four-day event.

Balancing Act

Not quite left, not quite right–that’s Brazil in a nutshell these days, as Lula tries to curry favor with the United States without alienating the leftist regimes in Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador, and beyond.  After signing a miltary cooperation accord with the U.S. today, the Brazilian government went out of its way to stress that it will not be giving the U.S. access to any military bases in Brazil.  Lula’s been walking this line for a while now; I don’t see him tripping up anytime soon.

Putin Meets with Chavez, Morales

The New York Times reports here on today’s big meeting in Venezuela between Chavez and Putin.  Evo Morales is expected to meet with Putin, as well.  Washington can’t be too happy about this.

Spygame

When will the absurdity end?  If you didn’t know better, you’d think the news out of Caracas and Bogota these days were actually coming from Washington and Moscow . . . in 1962.
